Gadgets

Tonight I went driving around looking for a pay phone. I know, you’re right. Why would anyone need a pay phone in this day and age? The phone company must feel the same way because I couldn’t find one. But I wanted to call Jake in Korea and since I gave up my home phone I had to find a land line because I didn’t think my cell phone had international capabilities (I was wrong about that – but that’s another story). On the drive back home I was thinking about all the gadgets we have and wishing that I had just one gadget to carry around with me that could do everything I need. Right now I carry my rio Forge mp3 player and my cell phone and my work wants me to start carrying a Blackberry, too. Being severly directionally handicapped, I wish I had a portable navigation system. Yeah, I have a compass in the car – but not OnStar – which is what I need. Even at work, I don’t leave my desk without a map of the building – no kidding! So when I got home I decided to google “gadgets”. The first site that came up was http://www.gizmodo.com/. There I learned that Comm Korea 2006, which is billed as Korea's Largest and Longest Running Telecommunications/IT, Networking, Wireless/Broadband and Internet Technologies Exhibition and Conference, is going on now. And Samsung (where brother-in-law- Robert works) is one of the major presenters. They have a very nifty gadget called Samsung Anycall SCH-B540. Except for the navigational system – it has everything I want in a phone – even blue tooth technology. I want one.

Mother's Day

Well, I didn’t get all the mounds of paperwork done – but I did get a darn good start. I thought if I had more organizational ‘tools’ I would be more motivated, so I spent some time googleing “office organization”, “no more clutter” and “procrastinators anonymous”. I found some really cool organizational stuff (check out these binders) but then I remembered the great storage boxes I bought last year at IKEA and the sad realization set in. What I need is someone to follow me around with a cattle prod... someone who will insist I get this stuff done... someone who will nag me incessantly until I realize it would be sooooo much better to do the paperwork than to listen to the nagging... What I need is my mom. I remember her standing at the foot of my bed, chanting, “Come on now, get up” or “Gooooooooooooooddd Mooooooornnnnnnnn-ING” – over and over again. She could be so annoying – but I have to give her this, she never gave up. She would stand at the end of that bed, chanting until the mission was accomplished. It got to be that I knew she wouldn’t give up – so on the first “Come on now, get up” or “Gooooooooooooooddd Mooooooornnnnnnnn-ING”, I would spring out of bed. I realize now – it didn’t take her long to train me to get up on the first call. Wish she was here now to do her magic.
I sure do miss my mom.

I'm a pack rat

Sometimes I dread the weekend because it means 'cleaning up', and cleaning up means going through the mounds of junk I have accumulated. I have stacks of paperwork that needs to be sorted through, but I invariably just end up creating 5 or 6 smaller, disheveled stacks. I hate to admit it, I always have at least one stack of 'I could use this for that' or 'I could make this out of that' ... I think I get a lot of that from Pop. He sure did love making things out of nothing. His dog-run log cabin, that won a state fair ribbon, was one of his crowning achievements, and he was especially proud that he scavanged all the wood from discarded heaps at new constructions sites. He would have loved 84 year old Gramma Tressa and her Bottle Village. She is my hero. I thought I had a lot of good junk. She actually made 15 houses (!) out of 1 million and 15 bottles (she actually counted them!) and she fashioned a fence from old television picture tubes. Her garden blooms with old doll heads and her walk is encrusted with license plates, scissors, plates, tiles, keys and the list goes on and on. If you want to hear Tressa talk about her home and her life, with her older sister chiming in, view this movie hosted by Folkstream.net:
If you're a pack rat like me, you will feel sooo much better after watching and learning from Gramma!
*You will need Quick Time to view the movie. If you don't have Quick Time installed you can get it here. Just be sure you don't also download the iTunes by deselecting that option after clicking the Free Download Now button.

Gone are the slow downloads of yesterday...

My, how things have changed. Just about everyone has a computer these days. And not just a computer - high speed internet access is more than commonplace. I can remember when I first connected to the net - with dial up modem access. S-L_O_W_!! I would click on a page, go make a pot of coffee, throw in a load of laundry, cruise by the computer to see how the page download was coming along, go make the bed and come back - and Wallah! Finally there was the page I requested - oh! I hate to remember how many times it was the wrong page! So much wasted time - waiting for those downloads. It certainly wasn't 'cruising' the internet - it was plodding. Now I do 'cruise' the net with FIOS (fiber optic cable) - but I still hate having to wait even a few seconds for a page to load - it's certianly not long enough to start coffee or a load of laundry, but it is long enough to play one of these 4 second games:
Warning: 4-second games may be addicting
This new collection of 20 randomly generated Flash microgames may be just what you need to fill your next few seconds of spare time. Avoid being stomped on, eaten by sharks, stung by bees, or losing to the computer at Pong. You have only 4 seconds on the clock for each task. That doesn't sound like a lot, but it's surprisingly lively.

Four-Second Fury is the newest creation from a 19-year-old college sophomore named John Cooney. According to his site, jmtb02.com, this prodigy has been doing interactive art, games, and web animations since high school and posting them on the Web, free for all to use. Play the game.
Thanks to Windows Secrets newsletter for this great site!
